“House of Two Lines” has a design language between two key elements – the line and the line - which brings aesthetics to the residence, separates spaces and also acts as an integral part of structures. Having had a plenty of vastu constraints, the clients wanted the complete vastu effect and also a unique and functioning residence.

We always believed that bringing in the natural light into the house adds to the essence of the spaces and the dwellers living in. Every single room in the house has an access to an outdoor space. The living room and the bedrooms on each floor opens up to the central courtyard space.

Flipping through our age-old Indian construction history, courtyards are the most functional space in a house. House of Two Lines slows out its spaces in and around the central courtyard. This forms the focal point to our design and elements surrounding it. To have more essence to it, the courtyard rises up from the sucken floor to a double height space, followed by an automated roofing system. The initial idea was to have an open courtyard, however, considering monsoon and wind directions the design was concentrated to have a luxury of having a mobile roof at the click of a remote button.

Norther wall of the courtyard has been uniquely designed with brick jaali to allow a free flow of the northern wind into the indoor garden area and the other adjoining spaces. The first-floor master bedroom balcony faces toward the double height courtyard looking ahead to the intricate jaali pattern. This double height exposed brick wall acts as a feature wall and is the first element to meet eyes when a person enters in.

The living and the dining area are separated by a massive 16’ heigh vertical standing wall. This element not only acts as a divider but also produces a giant TV unit wall, thereby, creating a enlarged space which is both visually appealing and functional. An identical element of 16’ wide horizontal wall between the living and sucken indoor garden area defines volume and balances the massing of the indoor space. Both the vertical and horizontal 16’ walls are detached from other spaces defining privacy with openness.

The elevation was designed with a minimal contemporary style. The free-flowing balconies extending towards the natural atmosphere and adds a pinch of drama to the massing of the residence. The cuboid evokes the harmony of massing, which is also carefully designed to about 16’ high, interlocked between two floors of the building with two light streaks creating a visual warmth.

“House of Two Lines” on a comprehensive context is a melancholy with natural whites, 16’ standing structures, intricate jaali allowing northern wind, light wells, sunken garden with high automated ceilings and a tint of brick red.
